City found themselves going into the last match of the season needing a better result than West Brom to stop them sliding into the third tier for the first time in there history. A packed tense Filbert Street was full of nerves but big Tony James (pictured right) popped up in the 24th minute to scramble in the winner in front of the kop and the place erupted! After a nervous 2nd half the scored filtered through from the West Brom game that they could only draw at Bristol Rovers. An enourmous pitch invasion followed and I remember being so happy a did a forward roll in the net and got my foot stuck! It was a close shave and such a relief we'd done it - there were some sore heads the next day! Gordon Lee is fondly remembered for saving the club from relegation to the uncharted depths of the (old) Third Division following the disastrous tenure of David Pleat. |
